Scrub typhus is a vector-borne disease caused by a bacteria Orientia tsutsugamushi and transmitted to humans through the bites of infected larval mites (chiggers). The causative organism, Orientia tsutsugamushi is an obligate intracellular gram-negative bacterium of the genus Orientia, order Rickettsiales within the Rickettsiaceae family. The recently identified Orientia chuto species in United Arab Emirates is another human pathogen causing scrub typhus.
